THE BEST CARE FOR ABDOMINAL EMERGENCIES STUDY

Summary of Study

This study is investigating what happens to patients who are admitted to hospital with an intestinal emergency.  These conditions are common and potentially life-threatening.  Patients often need emergency bowel surgery to get better, but not all patients have surgery.  Other treatments are available, but we do not have good evidence to say which may be better for patients.  In this study we will be:

1. Analysing historical data from patients who have been treated for an intestinal emergency at Portsmouth Hospital.

2. Identifying which types of treatments work better for different conditions and groups of patients.

3. Summarising this information so doctors have better evidence when discussing risks with patients with an intestinal emergency.

The full title of the study is "Best Care for Abdominal Emergencies: a Single Centre Retrospective Cohort Study" but we shorten this to BCAE

The study will start on 1st of December 2020 and run until 30th June 2022.

The project is funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Grant Applicant Number NIHR201558.  The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the NIHR or the Department of Health and Social Care.

This Study is registered as NCT04577339 on ClinicalTrials.gov - link here.
